It’s that time of year again: the dark nights are here and so are the opportunist thieves.

Burglaries spike by 1/3 when the clocks go back, according to figures by The Independent who also reported Aviva’s home insurance claims for theft rose by 115% on Bonfire Night alone in 2018. Even Northamptonshire Police are warning people of the higher risk of burglary at this time of year in the darker months. As a security distributor, it’s our responsibility to advise you on how to stay safe, and exactly which products we believe will contribute towards keeping your customers safe–especially in times like this where opportunist thieves take advantage of the dark nights that are quickly drawing in.

“We recognise the huge benefits technology now has in terms of home security with things such as alarms, video doorbells and other remote monitored security cameras really helping us out in terms of investigating and preventing burglaries.”

First of all, it goes without saying doors and windows should always be locked and keys well out of sight. We recommend contacting your customer and advising them to check windows and doors before leaving their homes or businesses. But sometimes this isn’t enough and it may be time for them to consider installing CCTV security cameras…

Using CCTV to deter potential thieves

It’s a scary thought that most burglaries this winter will happen when people are at home, according to The Independent. This is just another of many reasons as to why home security systems are a good idea: having CCTV cameras on show outside properties deters opportunist thieves and burglars. Have you ever seen footage on the news and social media of burglars being caught in the act because of CCTV systems recording them during a break in? Yep – so have we!
