Macmillan Coffee Morning 2023

Our amazing staff here at QED recently took part in Macmillan’s Coffee Morning to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The treats included chocolate cupcakes, Kinder Bueno blondies, rice crispy cakes, mini rolls, donuts, and so much more!

We are so proud to say we raised a whopping £248.07! We can’t thank our staff enough for their wonderful efforts in baking delicious treats and contributing to such a wonderful cause that’s so close to our heart.

This money raised has helped pay for a Macmillan nurse for a day, helping people living with cancer and providing support for their families.

Thank you again to everyone who participated.

We are incredibly thrilled to announce that our very own Danuta Plewa has been promoted internally to Warehouse Supervisor here at QED!

Within her new role, Danuta will be working closely with Mark, our Warehouse Manager, to further assist in the running of the warehouse. We’re so proud of this announcement, and we couldn’t think of anyone better to excel in this role.

Danuta’s QED Journey

Danuta joined QED in 2021 as a temp, during an incredibly busy period for us. Her hard-work and dedication in her role spoke volumes, and before long, she became a full-time member of the warehouse team.

During her time as a warehouse operative, she has achieved a forklift certification, and generated a wealth of knowledge about our products to help our customers.

Her level of organisation, planning, ‘can do’ attitude, and her bubbly personality are just a few reasons why she is adored here at QED.

On her promotion, Danuta said:

“This is an amazing opportunity for the next stage of my career and I’m so excited to get started in my new role. Our team in the warehouse play such an important role in the everyday running of the business at QED, and I’m delighted my hard work and dedication has been recognised for this promotion.

I work closely with the best team of people, and I can’t wait to continue doing so for many years to come.’’

“It’s so rewarding promoting people from within here at QED. Since day one, Danuta has shown how hardworking and passionate she is. When the Warehouse Supervisor role became available, I knew she was the perfect fit.

She makes every day working together an absolute joy. I’m so proud of what she has achieved so far, and I can’t wait to see what else she will accomplish in the future.’’

Have you heard the great news… We recently promoted the wonderful Eddie to the role of General Manager here at QED! We couldn’t be more proud of what he has achieved and we couldn’t think of anyone better for this position.

Within his new role, Eddie will oversee how we can improve the everyday running of the business and help grow the QED brand to where we want to be.

We’re incredibly excited about what the future holds – 2023 is going to be the best year yet!

We always want you to get to know the people behind QED, so we asked Eddie some questions to give you a little insight.

When Did You Start Working at QED?

I joined QED 5 years ago, in January 2018. I can’t believe how fast it has gone! I’ve worked in the Technical department helping our staff and customers with any advice or support they need with our products, running the department for the last 3 years. I am now proud to be moving into my new role as General Manager. I will still be involved with the technical team.

What New Skills Have You Learnt Throughout Your Time at QED?

I have been in the industry for nearly 20 years, following in the footsteps of the family name, for those of you who know, you know! Having previously worked for manufacturers, coming to QED has introduced me to so much more. Throughout my time here, I have learned more about all our other products, not just the cameras. This includes everything from access control, batteries and cable, wireless links, x-rays, and Z and L brackets. Y… because every day is a learning day.

What is Your Greatest Achievement at QED?

This is always a tough question. It’s always good when you find a solution to a problem. My standout would be a complete overhaul of our internal network and IT system. Jobs like this are never easy and we faced many challenges along the way, but we got there in the end.

What Are You Most Proud of?

100% the team. We’re very lucky to have an amazing set of people working here and it’s an absolute pleasure to work with them every day. It definitely feels like we’re all part of one big family.

A Fun Fact You May Not Know About Eddie…

He was a world-class superstar DJ, touring arenas around the country (he’s now retired to focus on this new role.)

Matt Philp, Managing Director, said:

“I have enjoyed working with Eddie for over 5 years now, he was made for this role. The combination of his work ethic, skills, and attitude made him the obvious choice.  His calm demeanour and ability to look at the bigger picture, whilst ensuring we achieve our goals will allow us to move forward freeing me up to concentrate on other elements of the business with confidence.”

National Stress Awareness Day: How We Provide Support for Our Employees

November 2nd marks National Stress Awareness Day. Today highlights the many ways stress can affect us in our everyday lives, and what we can do to manage and reduce our stress when we experience it.

Although feeling under pressure is a normal part of life, if we start to become overwhelmed without any help, it can lead to mental health conditions developing. According to Champion Health, one in 14 UK adults feel stressed every single day, and 74% of people feel so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope.

There are many helplines offering advice and support if you need to talk to someone if you feel you are struggling to cope.

What Can Cause Stress?

Stress is what we feel when under too much mental or emotional pressure. It is our body’s reaction to help us deal with pressure or threats. When we experience stress, our body’s release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.

Once the threat or pressure of the ‘flight or fight’ response has passed, our hormone levels return to normal.

Small amounts of stress can motivate us to take action and make us feel excited, however too much stress can have a largely negative effect, such as a change in mood, and a change in our body.

There are many factors that can cause stress, such as:

  • Facing big challenges
  • Facing changes in our life
  • Feeling under intense pressure
  • Worrying about something
  • Responsibilities we find overwhelming
  • Lack of control over a situation
  • Going through a period of uncertainty
  • Dealing with difficult relationships
  • Being out of your comfort zone

Stress affects everyone differently, but there are common emotional signs you can look out for. These include:

  • Feeling angry, irritable, and restless
  • Feeling overwhelmed, demotivated, or unfocused
  • Can’t sleep or sleeping too much
  • Constantly worrying
  • Lack of concentration or problems with memory
  • Making bad decisions

Providing our Employees with Mental Health Support

We are committed to providing the right support for all our employees here at QED. Their wellbeing is a number one priority for us.

We have two qualified Mental Health First Aiders who are available for our employees to speak to if they want to talk about anything affecting their mental health. Hannah and Barbara provide a listening ear to all at QED and know how to deal with a mental health emergency in the workplace. It’s so important for us to feel like we can talk, and a simple conversation can take a huge weight off our shoulders.

We are one big family here, and we will continue to provide the utmost support for our staff.

Hannah, our Operations Manager said:

‘’The two-day course Barbara and I attended with St. John’s Ambulance gave us a fantastic insight into the many mental health conditions many of us deal with daily and how to help any of our colleagues should they encounter any of them.’’

“Deal” also being the operative word as we also learnt how to try and remove the negative stigma around mental health conditions that many of us have grown up with. After going on the course, we came back to work and updated our mental health policy and shared awareness of this with the rest of the team, this also included the confidentiality rules when talking to each other about mental health conditions and now means QED are well equipped to provide support to anyone who may need it.’’

Tips on How You Can Manage Stress

Everybody deals with stress differently, but by making slight lifestyle changes, you can reduce your stress drastically.

The most important tip is to talk to someone. This can have an instant impact and you can feel the weight lift off your shoulders as you offload all of your worries. Keeping your feelings and thoughts trapped inside will only increase your stress which will negatively impact your mental health.

Exercise and keeping active is a great way to relieve any stress you feel building. On the days you find yourself struggling, why not go for a run, walk, cycle, or attend a gym class. Even doing a little housework or gardening can help clear your head and make you feel so much better.

Doing something nice for yourself at least once a day is so important. This could be something as simple as eating something you enjoy, reading that book you’ve always wanted to read, or watching a film you’ve been waiting to watch for a while. These little accomplishments can have a hugely positive effect on your wellbeing.

We have a bookshelf in our QED office stacked full of fantastic books our staff can help themselves to.

We also have a beautiful garden area at the front of our offices, which provides the perfect place to relax, unwind, and de-stress on the days we begin to feel a little overwhelmed.

If any member of the QED family is dealing with any aspects of stress or mental health, we are here to help them through it every single step of the way.
