The Genesis Walk Test Instrument is an invaluable tool when it comes to setting up and testing a wireless PIR system. An LCD shows PIR information such as Detection, Tamper, Cloak, Shock and re-orientation. In addition it shows ID number, Lens type, Pulse count setting, signal strength and battery condition. Each detection or tamper is accompanied by an audible bleep. In addition, the display can also show an alpha numeric name for each PIR which makes identification easier. The walk tester will receive signals directly from the PIR detectors for fast accurate set up of the detection zones but the main advantage is when it receives the signals via the Masthead. This feature is unique and enables the installer to verify that the masthead receiver is receiving and that the signal strength at the masthead is sufficient. This walk tester can also transmit to simulate a PIR in order to check proposed PIR positions before installation begins.

Luminite: Providing Construction Site Security Solutions For a Range of Scenarios
Theft of construction equipment, machinery and fuel costs the construction industry over £800 million each year. Luminite offers a range of wireless security solutions aimed at sites where power is often compromised.
Wireless PIR Cameras
OCULi, from Luminite, is battery powered and provides rapid visual verification of an event which can be viewed in seconds via a mobile app or online portal. The Wireless HD 4G PIR Camera provides seven seconds of HD images upon detection. Users can also request more footage of an event activation. A solar conversion kit makes it viable to live stream images and manually arm/disarm, overriding the automatic arm schedule.
The new 40m version is particularly suited to detecting vehicles or assets across a large area with the telephoto lens offering clear, close-up images from a distance.
Working with current security patrols or as a standalone system, alarm events can be viewed within seconds and the appropriate response made. Costs can be saved by ascertaining the cause of the alarm and filtering out non-events meaning personnel do not have to attend unnecessarily. Units can be wall-mounted or affixed to scaffolding.
Alertex
Around 40% (approximately 100,000) of all construction site fires are started deliberately and in line with HSG168 regulations, all sites must display a visual AND audible alert to fire. The Alertex wireless fire system has been designed specifically for temporary and evolving sites and complies with HSE Fire Safety Guidelines.
Units are quickly deployable around a site and have a robust 1km transmission range between units. Decibel levels can be adjusted to a maximum of 117 dB and are weatherproof to IP66 standard.
Wireless heat and smoke detectors can be added to a system and will activate Alertex units within their 100m range.
Genesis
Portable CCTV towers offer a quick and easily deployable option for construction companies. When fitted with Genesis PIR detectors or OCULi units they provide a robust solution with alarm and tamper relays.
A battery-powered sounder can also be used as an audible deterrent. These are fitted with an adjustable timer and can work with any alarm product that has volt free contacts. PIR detectors can also be used in conjunction with lighting control on sites at night.
Exclusive Zones
Construction sites often need to create temporary exclusion zones as a warning for when an area becomes too dangerous for workers or pedestrians to enter. This can be due to crane activity, moving vehicles, a spillage, workers at height or any other type of hazardous activity.
Alertex units can be quickly deployed around a perimeter to create an exclusion zone. These can be activated via a mobile key fob from 100 metres away and tripods are available for mounting units.
Boundary Shield
Active Wireless IR beams can be wall or pole mounted and create an invisible perimeter barrier around a whole site or part of a site where additional security is required, for example, storage areas for flammable material. The beams are fitted with Genesis transmitters and are compatible with all Genesis products.
60m and 100m beams are available with either fixed or adjustable frequency control to avoid cross-talk between beams.

Luminite introduce new OCULi features
Luminite announce a range of new features for the OCULi wireless PIR camera.
The current COVID-19 crisis highlights the need for visual verification equipment standing in for security personnel; and passively protecting sites. In turn, this has sparked a great amount of interest in OCULi. The standalone OCULi unit is a powerful PIR detector featuring a built-in camera, that will only send notifications upon a detection event; thus, eliminating the need for constant monitoring.
OCULi is fully wireless and battery-operated, making it perfect for protecting vulnerable areas such as vacant properties and construction sites where you cannot install CCTV due to wiring and power limitations.
Updated Power Supply
The most critical new feature is the updated power supply. This new feature uses batteries in series; therefore, extending battery life and supporting rechargeable lithium batteries to use in conjunction with solar panels.
When using rechargeable batteries and a solar panel, you can leave OCULi’s modem online for users to view live images via the mobile app or web portal. The unit recognises changes to the arming schedule immediately and reduced time in server image uploads means it only takes three seconds (typically).
Speaker Updates
When using OCULi with a speaker, events automatically trigger and air a bespoke message once the video finishes recording. The user can record the message and write it onto the SD card.
SIM Changes
Furthermore, Luminite has now simplified SIM activation and their non-network specific UK SIMs make use of EE network coverage.
“OCULi is designed to offer the end user a host of functions without power. The updates our team have been developing around power supply and the use of solar energy makes OCULi a compelling option for installers to offer certain sectors of the market, where traditional security devices cannot be used due to power constraints.” – Graham Creek, Managing Director at Luminite.

The Luminite wireless lockdown system provides an easy, time-saving solution for St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School
Wireless Lockdown System Installed at St. Joseph’s Primary School
St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School is a vibrant and engaging mid-size primary school with 189 pupils in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The school is highly regarded both academically and socially and places an emphasis on the teachings of the Catholic religion. At the heart of the school is a caring and creative learning environment where all students are made to feel safe. St. Joseph’s recently approached D-Tect based in Leeds, to install a lockdown system to be used in the case of an emergency or threat to children and staff.
For this particular site, a mixture of internal and external call points and sounder/beacons were used with the Master call point situated in the main school office. Three external sounder/beacons were placed around the playground and entrance with a further seven units sited inside the school. Using a proven, secure mesh protocol, when one Nexus unit is activated, it triggers all units in range to sound an audible alert accompanied by a flashing beacon light.
Nexus lockdown units are blue to differentiate them from traditional fire alarms. In line with recent Ofsted guidelines, which state that a lockdown alarm must be distinctive in sound from a fire alarm, there are 32 sounds to choose from. There is also a voice variant available which will sound a lockdown message which can be customised by the school. The caretaker at St. Joseph’s was able to advise the engineers of the best positions for the Nexus alert points. As a result, the installation was completed within a few hours.
QED customer, D-Tect, install Nexus Wireless Lockdown System
Given the high costs involved in wiring a traditional system, both in terms of manpower and installation costs, D-Tect were delighted to be able to offer St. Joseph’s a competitive price for the wireless lockdown system. At the same time, they were commissioned to install an internal public address system for the school’s announcements.
Natalie Marshall, Director at D-Tect commented: “With the introduction of new Ofsted guidelines many schools and colleges are looking to introduce an efficient lockdown system with minimum disruption to their existing systems already in place. It is in this regard that the Nexus lockdown system comes into its own with its unique features. Our campaign offering safety and security checks to schools and colleges within the Yorkshire Region has proved to be a great success, with St Joseph’s being one of our first installations. We have now expanded our coverage to the remainder of the UK, and plan to provide suitable solutions to many more schools and colleges throughout the country.”

Martyn’s Law Introduced

What is Martyn’s Law?
The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, otherwise known as Martyn’s Law, received Royal Assent on the 3rd of April 2025. There will be an implementation period of two years before the Act comes into force to enable premises to act on their new obligations. The purpose of Martyn’s Law is to provide a framework whereby premises with certain capacities are prepared for, and protected against, terrorist attacks to reduce their impact. The driving force behind the proposed legislation is Figen Murray, the mother of Martyn Hett who was tragically killed alongside 21 others in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017. Martyn’s Law legislation will apply across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The aim of Martyn’s Law is to improve the safety and security of public venues and keep the public safe from terrorism. The Law will ensure that public premises that reasonably expect 200 – 799 individuals to be present at the same time will be covered by the STANDARD TIER. Premises or events reasonably expecting 800 or more individuals to be present at the same time will be covered by the ENHANCED TIER. Apart from the capacity, premises that fall within the scope of the new legislation must be accessible to the public and used for a purpose listed in the Act such as entertainment, retail, leisure etc. so will include music venues, theatres, and department stores. Provision has been made for temporary event spaces such as festivals.
A Government Regulator will be established through a new function of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Refer factsheet here.
Requirements:
STANDARD TIER
There were several concerns raised during consultations under the last Government with an emphasis on avoiding undue burdens on smaller premises whilst ensuring public protection. Premises within the standard tier will be required to have in place appropriate and reasonably practicable public protection procedures to reduce the risk of physical harm in the event of an attack. Venues that fall into the standard tier must notify the Regulator they have become responsible for premises within the scope of the Act.
Broadly, it is not expected that physical alterations be undertaken at standard tier premises however, workers will need to be sufficiently instructed or trained to conduct procedural measures effectively. It should be noted that all schools and places of worship will be placed within the Standard Tier regardless of their capacity.
IMPACT ON SCHOOLS
All schools, irrespective of their capacity, will fall under the STANDARD TIER. During the two-year implementation period schools will be advised to take reasonable steps to improve their preparedness for potential threats. Schools should be reviewing their current arrangements via enhanced security risk assessments and training, with an emphasis on those risks from terrorism. They should be undertaking a terrorism risk assessment, a draft evaluation of which has been published by the Home Office Draft your evaluation.
A natural area for review will be the school’s lockdown procedure. We know that a school’s lockdown alert must sound distinctive to the fire alert, as one means stay on the premises and find a place of safety whilst the other is to evacuate. To solidify their processes, the draft terrorism risk assessment asks how people on the premises will be informed that it has locked down and that they should not attempt to leave due to a threat outside.
Schools may therefore wish to introduce a quickly identifiable audible and/or visual alert system as part of their preparedness. At the very least schools should be reviewing their current emergency plans and seeking security advice.
Compliance with Martyn’s Law is likely to form part of the Ofsted inspection process and failure to comply may lead to improvement notices being issued.
It should be noted that whilst all schools, irrespective of capacity will fall under standard tier regulations, higher education premises will be assessed according to capacity as they are generally more openly accessible to members of the public and are more frequently used for events.
ENHANCED TIER
Larger venues must notify the Regulator of their event. They must ensure they take ‘reasonably practicable’ measures to reduce the risk of a terrorist attack occurring or physical harm being caused. They must keep and maintain a security document, aided by an assessment of the terrorism risk. They must also assign a designated senior individual for the premise or event to oversee and ensure compliance with the additional requirements.
Fines for non-compliance are expected to be up to £10,000 for Standard Tier premises and up to £18 million or 5% of global company revenue for Enhanced Tier premises.
The Regulator will monitor compliance and advise premises within the scope of the Bill. Measures to address non-compliance and full monetary sanctions are yet to be announced.

How Can OCULi HD Aid The Security of Commercial and Residential Vacant Properties?
The number of unoccupied properties in the UK has reached record highs with over 615,000 empty buildings in 2019. Over 440,000 of these were residential dwellings and over 170,000 were commercial buildings representing over 150 million square feet of vacant retail space. Residential vacancies had seen a stark increase of 75% since 2012 and post pandemic these figures will only rise in number.
Whatever the reason a property is vacant, whether residential or commercial, they become a target for anti-social behaviour, including vandalism, theft of materials such as roof tiles and fly-tipping. In turn, a build-up of rubbish leads to rodent and insect infestations and there are obvious threats such as arson. Empty buildings also attract squatters who can be costly and timely to remove.
As such, empty buildings cost more to insure but sufficient security can mitigate these additional costs and there are now a plethora of security installers who offer vacant property protection as part of their portfolio.
OCULi HD is a standalone PIR with a built-in camera which can be powered by lithium batteries or solar. It does not require a hub or wi-fi connection and will provide rapid visual verification of an intruder which can be viewed in seconds via a mobile app or online portal. Users can request more footage of an event and if powered by solar users can live stream images. OCULi HD also has a Time Lapse mode where it takes an image at regular intervals to compile a Time Lapse video.
Crucially, for vacant property protection, there are a number of sounder functions to add an extra layer of security. These include live voice challenge, or an automatic sounder or message can be played whenever the motion sensor is triggered. OCULi HD units are also fitted with a powerful IR providing an extra deterrent at night. Units can be easily deployed in minutes using a magnetic mount.
OCULi HD integrates with popular third-party platforms if protecting property via a security monitoring company or units can be self-monitored using the portal and app.

Why Are Schools Choosing Wireless Lockdown Systems?
As part of the Ofsted inspection, schools must be able to demonstrate that their lockdown alert is distinct in sound from their fire alert as one means stay and the other means evacuate.
The ALERTEX range of call points and sounder/beacons is the perfect lockdown solution for a school.
The ALERTEX Lockdown system from Luminite is a wireless critical alert system, designed to give a clear alert in the event of an activation.
This is a battery powered system that will, when activated, give an audible and visual Lockdown alert with the aim of minimising disruption to the learning environment whilst ensuring the safety of pupils and staff.
Quick and Easy to Install
Connecting a wired system in schools is costly, invasive and a lengthy undertaking. Alertex units are delivered pre-programmed so once the batteries are inserted units can be screwed in place and the system is ready. This is particularly beneficial for older or listed buildings where civil works are often not allowed.
Minimal Disruption
Schools can carry out silent tests of the system at any time meaning there is no disruption to the school day.
