Wheelchair Athletics Club “heartbroken” after vandals destroy specialist kit

Dumfries and Galloway Wheelchair Athletics Club were left devastated after vandals set alight to tens of thousands of pounds worth of specialist equipment stored in a container at the David Keswick Centre.

Back in May of this year, Dumfries and Galloway Wheelchair Athletics Club were left devastated after vandals set alight to tens of thousands of pounds worth of specialist equipment stored in a container at the David Keswick Centre.

High jump mats were positioned around the container before the fire was set, destroying custom-made kit, spare parts, helmets and other specialist equipment used to provide disable youngsters with the chance to take part in athletics.

After hearing the news, GalloGlas Group reached out to the Club with hopes to deter and capture any future opportunist vandals by installing four 5MP Light Hunter Cameras on the site which Quality Essential Distribution quickly supplied to kickstart the install.

The LightHunter camera provides colourful and high-resolution images in different light conditions and will ensure CCTV images provide details such as facial features, clothing colour and even car registration plates. This information can be provided to police and more importantly significantly improve the security of the storage facility and deter any future attempts by vandals.

Richie Nicoll, Managing Director at GalloGlas said:

“GalloGlas were delighted to be given the opportunity to secure Dumfries & Galloway Wheelchair Track Athletics Club after their recent arson attack.  It was heart breaking to see so much vital kit and equipment destroyed by such a mindless attack. At GalloGlas Group, we commit to a certain amount of non-profit jobs to help our local community and this was exactly the type of project that met this criteria. This gives Shelby and Co our ‘Complete Peace of Mind’ promise, and that their newly purchased equipment is monitored 24/7.”

New Digital Marketeer appointed at Quality Essential Distribution

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Olivia Fishwick in the role of Digital Marketing Assistant.

This is a new role at QED aimed to strengthen the marketing team with a focus on social media, eMarketing and website management.

Olivia started at QED in January 2017 as a Digital Marketing Apprentice: creating social media content, writing blog posts and working on the business’s search engine visibility. In 2018, Olivia really wanted to pursue her makeup business whilst studying Digital Marketing at University. Throughout this 3-year journey, QED supported Olivia and offered her a role to continue as their Digital Marketing Assistant once a week alongside her studies and business.

Fast-forward to 2021, having graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree and winning the Propeller Enterprise Award, Inspiring Female Student Award and awards for the highest average grades across her course, Olivia is now working full-time at QED. She mainly focuses on delivering high-performing e-mail campaigns, fun and engaging social media content and vibrant design work.

Catherine Seddon, Marketing Manager, said:

“Olivia is very creative and results driven and what makes her different is her understanding that marketing is about developing good relationships with customers and being consistent with the brand image and messaging. The QED brand is all about good people and working in partnership with customers and suppliers, so we all succeed. Olivia has grown and developed over the past few years and after graduating in July I was over the moon when she joined us full time.”

Olivia Fishwick said:

“From designing and launching e-shot campaigns and new product launches, to managing the social media and more, every day at QED is fast-paced and different. Despite this, what really gravitated me back towards the company continually over the past four years is its people. There are not many companies out there that are willing to let you leave to pursue a personal goal; then remain your personal cheerleader whilst pursuing those personal goals and welcome you back with open arms. That to me demonstrates a company that truly values its employees, their aspirations and encourages them to strive for greatness. I will never forget the support this business has and continues to give me.”

New partnership between QED and EmpiricAI brings Computer Vision AI to wider market

EmpiricAI has secured a major distribution agreement with electronic security distributor QED – its first UK partner – that will see its innovative Computer Vision AI (Artificial Intelligence) solution offered across the UK and Europe.

The announcement comes against a growing realisation that the security industry plays a crucial role not only in the protection of people and places, but providing peace of mind for employers and employees in a wide variety of workplaces.

QED & EmpiricAI

QED now becomes one of the first to market with an advanced Computer Vision AI solution, which was developed by EmpiricAI specifically for improving health & safety and productivity in business and industry.

Headquartered in Preston, Lancashire, QED is expecting strong demand for its new offering from a range of sectors including construction, manufacturing, corporate offices, retail and other customer-facing branches.

QED was initially attracted by EmpiricAI’s WorkSafe Analytics (WSA) platform because of its functionality and ease of use. WSA uses AI-powered Computer Vision technology to help businesses get an accurate view of potential risks in the workplace. The software ensures compliance to health & safety guidelines.

Integrated into on-site CCTV implementations, WSA is able to carry out real-time monitoring and detecting of any non-compliance of social distancing, correct PPE/mask usage and occupancy guidelines. Comprehensive analytics and reporting on compliance at room, building, site-wide levels and their trends over time enables organisations to monitor and improve the effectiveness of their health and safety initiatives.

EmpiricAI’s Computer Vision technology has been shown to restore employee confidence around safety. This is against a background of research showing that more than 60% of workers report inadequate safety in their workplace when considering all factors, not just the pandemic, which can significantly affect their productivity.

“It is a pleasure to work with EmpiricAI.”

Steve Constantine, QED’s Product Development Director, said:

“This partnership with EmpiricAI has been driven by the need to add more flexibility to our product range to support our partners working in environments where it’s important to monitor compliance with safety procedures. In addition, it also allows us to provide a timely and relevant solution to help address the health and safety challenges businesses are currently facing. It is a pleasure to work with EmpiricAI, whose range of products fills a gap in the marketplace like nobody else.”

Salman Chaudhary, CEO at EmpiricAI, explains:

“Our WorkSafe Analytics will complement QED’s customer-driven solutions. We see the partnership with QED bringing the benefits of Computer Vision to a much wider market especially those that are required to adhere to strict health & safety procedures. The combination of our advanced technology, backed up with QED’s security offering and proven customer service, will make the benefits of Computer Vision much more accessible to customers.”

SilverNet ECHO Wireless Solutions

SilverNet Debunk Wireless Myths

Why Wireless?

If you’re considering choosing a wireless network over a fixed network for your next project you might be wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

There are a number of common misconceptions and myths about wireless technology that you may be concerned about, particularly around security, reliability, usability and safety. SilverNet want to dispel these myths and highlight the benefits of choosing wireless to help you feel confident in your decision.

Myth No.1 – Wireless isn’t secure

In the early days of wireless, manufacturers tried to make it easy for end users by configuring equipment to be ready to go straight out of the box. As convenient as this was for initial set-up, it contributed to the miconception that wireless isn’t secure enough due to equipment being set-up using default passwords.

Whilst it is almost impossible to make any network completely secure, modern wireless technology provides highly effective counter measures through the use of complex encryption technology. The encryption standard WPA2 utilises AES 128 (Advanced Encryption Standard). The next iteration, WP3, is even more secure as it operates at AES 256.

AES is the algorithm for the encryption of electronic data. The differences between AES 128 and AES 256 encryptions are too technical for this blog post! It is safe to say however that 128-bit algorithm is complex and strong enough to make a cyber-attack ineffective in getting access to valuable information. Experts have reported that AES 128 will be secure and uncrackable for at least the next hundred years or so. AES 256 is even stronger.

SilverNet PRO Range Gen 3 and Gen 4 equipment all come with AES 256  as standard, which is approved for use with government and military data. If it’s secure enough for them, it’s secure enough for everyone.

Myth No.2 – Wireless is difficult to set up

This myth may stem from reality – back when wireless technology was first introduced, it could be difficult for users to set up, as it was a brand new technology. In the many years that have passed since then, technology has advanced enormously and with the right tools, wireless can easily be set up.

SilverNet have a handy configuration tool which makes setting up your wireless network easier than ever. Using SilverView’s ‘Quick Config’ tool you can configure a link in minutes and see real time throughput and performance.

Myth No.3 – Wireless is unreliable

It’s understandable why customers may think that wireless can be unreliable: Wi-Fi and mobile reception certainly can be patchy at times due to the nature of its “best effort” design. But this myth simply isn’t true for Point to Point networks, particularly with a well designed and implemented network that will further mitigate the potential for connectivity and reliability issues.

Alternative frequencies are also available, some of which are licensed so you can effectively buy your own spectrum and run fibre through the air. With the correct set-up, efficient planning and if you follow SilverNet’s “Golden Rules” below, then you are sure to stay out of trouble.

SilverNet’s Golden Rules of Wireless Installation

  1. Always have a clear line of sight for the best possible link quality and to avoid link dropping. Remember that buildings or lorries can cause issues.
  2. Avoid trees where possible. Trees absorb the RF signal and can cause any link to drop at random.
  3. Make sure to use decent shielded network cables to prevent interference.
  4. Never scrimp on network switches when working with video that runs constabtly. It isn’t worth the money you may save initially.

Why Wireless?

SilverNet have debunked the most common myths surrounding wireless networks above, but there are still many more benefits to installing a wireless solution. While Fibre Optic infrastructure can be a great, robust solution in urban environments, it has several disadvantages when compared to wireless, one of the biggest being cost.

Analysis has shown that between 60% and 80% of the capital cost of a fibre project is due to civil work, ducts and cables. A significant expense of these projects is digging holes and filling them in again. Installing a wireless network system to compliment a core fibre network is a cost-effective solution. No time or money gets wasted digging and filling holes during installation, and once up and running, the operating costs are low.

Wireless networks are also more flexible. It’s quick and simple to deploy initially, and if you find you need to move things around, it’s much easier to do with wireless compared to a cabled network. Installation of a fixed network takes time and increases project risk, whereas setting up a wireless network can be done quickly, is simple to set-up (especially with the right tools) and involves minimal risk.

In Summary

There are still some common myths when it comes to wireless, misconceptions which no longer hold true. Choosing a wireless network will save you money and time, decrease project risk, increase flexibility and enable you to gain control over your network.

SilverNet designs and manufactures high performance wireless networking equipment. Whether you require an outdoor wireless or fibre connection for your transmission of CCTV or you need to network a new building to an existing one via a wireless bridge or fibre link, SilverNet has the products and expertise to provide a complete solution.

SilverNet’s easy to install, configure, and control indoor and outdoor wireless solutions are backed up with outstanding technical support because they believe in supporting their customers every step of the way. Path profiling, on site surveys, system design and a host of other free tools are available to assist.

National Apprenticeship Week – hear from QED’s Apprentices

Quality Essential Distribution (QED) has always been huge advocates for earning whilst learning.

Matt Philp, Managing Director, QED, said: “We’re strong believers that young people who choose a different path to university are just as capable, and rooted deep in our business values is supporting young people to excel not only in their area of study, but in life. In fact, a lot of our young workforce began their journey with us as apprentices: each now on their own paths, thriving in their own amazing way!”

Meet Olivia for National Apprenticeship Week

As the writer of this article, I’d like to take a moment to shine light on the incredible support QED have offered me over the past 4 years. In January 2017, I started the business as a Marketing Apprentice after studying A-Levels. From the get-go, QED trusted me in my role. They gave me responsibility over the social media channels, editorial writing, the blog, video editing, digital design – they let my creativity run wild with no leash. This is the sort of trust young people need in business: the opportunity to showcase what skills and talents they can truly bring to a business, propped up by the business’s unending support and willingness to help us apprentices learn.

In August 2018, I made the decision to return to University full time to take on the challenge of self-employment. Even after my apprenticeship, QED were like my second family. They supported me, offered self-employment advice and asked if I’d like to work flexibly for them once a week alongside my studies!

Fast forward to the present day–February 2021–and the company remains a huge cheerleader for my future aspirations and goals. Makeup artist, blogger, writer, marketeer–whatever career I decide, QED are always there supporting me. I know for sure that this support is the main reason I’ve just accepted a full-time role with them for after University.

Let’s meet our other members of staff that started their journey’s as apprentices…

Meet Jack for National Apprenticeship Week

“I study BSc Digital and Technology Solutions at the University of Central Lancashire. This degree covers a variety of topics within Technology as an industry but focuses specifically on Systems Analysis and Design, Programming and Databases.

At QED, I use these skills to better develop internal systems for more efficient business processes. I design and create bespoke software solutions within QED’s ERP system and create business analysis and reports from QED’s extensive database.

QED have helped me acquire the skills I need to develop as a businessperson and supported me throughout my degree apprentice journey; offering plentiful advice from project ideas to applying academic knowledge in the real world.”

Meet Iasmina for National Apprenticeship Week

“Ever since childhood, I have always been a hands-on person, with the thought of sitting down for hours on end never appealing to me. However, I looked into apprenticeships at Preston College and knew immediately this provided everything I wanted in terms of education blended with hands-on learning.

I did try college for a year. I just knew it wasn’t for me; even though I tried really hard to endure it. What made things worse for me was lockdown, however, I do believe this helped me realise sitting for hours doing online lessons just wasn’t right for me. So, I left college and began my hunt for an apprenticeship, knowing full well that’s what I wished to do!

QED have helped me in many aspects such as adapting into adult life after education, evolving my communication skills and encouraging me to come out of my shell and meet new people. It takes me a while to get out of my shy stage but working at QED has already started to bring out the best of my bubbly personality.”

Meet Joel for National Apprenticeship Week

“University was never something that interested me; so, I started at QED as a Sales Administrator Apprentice in 2016. I wanted to work and having the opportunity to learn simultaneously alongside work was the perfect opportunity for me.

I may have started my career at QED in Sales, but their constant support and encouragement when it came to discovering what I love most allowed me to find my feet in the Warehouse team where I am now a full-time Warehouse assistant. I’m big on progression; continuing to learn about warehouse operations and logistics. I’m currently a part of updating the bar-coding system in the warehouse which will help streamline our operations, improve efficiency and benefit the customer massively.”

Caught On Camera – Best Switch for CCTV Surveillance

It goes without saying that having a CCTV camera installed at your premises acts as a serious deterrent to criminals and anyone carrying out illegal activities. Even the mere sight of a CCTV camera represents the presence of the law; deterring any potential criminals and opportunists from your property.

All companies throughout commercial properties such as office buildings and retail outlets require careful consideration of integrated security solutions. Although security guards provide an element of protection, their eyes and ears are not extensive enough to over watch the entire premises. This is where cameras within CCTV security systems play a crucial role within the daily running of a business.

The rapid development within modern IP technology hasn’t evaded the security industry. IP surveillance systems are becoming ever more popular; 2019 alone was reported as the year the CCTV and video surveillance market came to a “tipping point”, with revenue for network video overtaking analogue for the first time ever, according to The World Market for CCTV and Video Surveillance Equipment from IMS Research.

In other words, an increasing number of new surveillance projects are now completely IP-based and need qualitative network equipment to work properly. There are a lot of different network peripherals on the market, but a key question is how do you choose and use them efficiently to ensure your system reaches the maximum performance in every operating environment?

All available image monitoring and traffic processing capabilities of a device can and should, of course, always be tested in the hunt for optimised performance. However, these assessments of different types of IT devices must be done correctly for the output data to provide critical information on the device capabilities. Here we examine the commonly heard of “backbone full wired speed” and “PoE capability” to see how these functions should be defined and tested.

One large product group that is important to know about when setting up a camera system for IP surveillance is switches. A network switch plays an integral part in most modern Ethernet local area networks (LANs), and a network can have more than one switch. The switch only sends data to the receiver that is supposed to have access to the given information. In this way, a network doesn’t overload when data is sent. This also ensures higher security as it is hard to gain access to information not meant for another computer.

Matt Philip, Managing Director, Quality Essential Distribution said:

“We made a decision to partner with Tenda as they are recognised as a leading supplier of networking devices.   More importantly, we believe customers will reap the biggest benefit as we will offer a range of high-performance networking solutions at a very competitive price.”

“For example, the 9-port fast Ethernet switch has 9 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports, equipped with large packet buffer, which ensures smooth streaming even when 8 HD IP cameras are working simultaneously. You can enable port VLAN mode of the switch to protect your LAN network from broadcast storm and prevent loss of monitoring images. It also offers 6 kV lightning protection for its uplink port and with our unpredictable weather this can only be a plus!”

“In my view it’s the perfect choice for small and medium-sized IP surveillance projects and enterprises which will not only ensure better performance, but also better surveillance.”

There are many further reasons as to why CCTV surveillance requires a good switch as an advantageous installation for any business premises; so why not consider installing a switch at your company’s site and providing yourself and your staff a total peace of mind in terms of safety of your operations?

OmniView: NEW from Uniview

OmniView

Uniview, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of video surveillance solutions, has introduced the brand-new OmniView panoramic camera series. It is the most suitable product for panoramic surveillance which enables wide-area monitoring.

Impressive image display

The new camera provides 180 degree distortion-free, extreme high-definition images. It does this by combining four 1.8” progressive scan CMOS sensors into one unit. Additionally, the large F1.8 iris and high-light sensitivity sensors are perfectly integrated to demonstrate super low-illumination picture performance. Four engineered infrared LEDs can be separately controlled to avoid image overexposure where reflective objects may be around the installation site. The LED can be manually turned off near the objects.

uniview omniview

Powerful design and ability

OmniView is made for large-scale security monitoring. For example, stadiums, parking lots, entertainment venues and large warehouses. This is possible thanks to the one multi-sensor unit of the OmniView series camera that is capable of delivering an extraordinary wide range panoramic display. There will be no more multiple cameras applied, which reduces user cost and simplifies installations.

Not only do you have a 180 degree view, but the OmniView camera also has the ability to track objects intelligently with a linkage PTZ (called 5ePTZ). Furthermore, this allows the OmniView to zoom in and track 5 small objects simultaneously. In other words, it supports panoramic surveillance and detailed close-up’s within only one image. It also features intrusion detection, cross-line detection, scene change detection, heatmap, objects removal and abandon.
