Structured Cabling

Frequently Asked Questions

A guide to Structured cabling and standards

Why does structured cabling even matter?โ€ฏ

It keeps you connected. Most of the technology you use is supported by structured cabling: Wi-Fi, VoIP, DAS, security cameras, audio visual systems, IoT sensors, voice and data cabling, and the list keeps growing. It follows standards which ensures that these technologies operate as designed when connected.

How do I know what Cat cable to use?

The best category of ethernet cableโ€ฏdepends on your internet needs. Category 5 cables are the most basic ethernet cable. However, they are still robust enough for most standard browsing. However, if you are regularly streaming or gaming, a more powerful Cat6 or Cat7 cable will be preferable for you.

How far can Cat cable run?

The maximum length of a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable is about 295 ft. (90 m), plus up to 16 ft. (5 m) of patch cable on either end, for a total ofโ€ฏ328 feet or 100 meters. Beyond this, the signal begins to degrade, reducing the speed and reliability of the connection.

Can you mix Cat5 and Cat6?

Yes but your connection will run at the lowest common denominator – for example,โ€ฏif the 1st part of the cable run which is Cat5e and the rest is made up of Cat6, then the whole cable run will behave as if its Cat5e.

How do I know what speed my Ethernet cable is?

Go to Network and Sharing Centre. Click the Change adapter settings link from the left pane. Double-click on your Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter to open its properties. Check the connection speed of your network adapter in the Speed field.

What is the difference between T568A & T568B Wiring Standards?

T568A and T568B use different colour assignments for pin locations on eight pin modular connectors. T568A follows an older phone standard, while T568B is based on a commercial standard. Neither scheme is technically superior as both ends of the cable are wired the same.

The difference in T568B and T568A wiring schemesโ€ฏis important to understand when terminating RJ45 connectors for Ethernet cables. These two schemes are the most common standards for wiring eight-position modular plugs and jacks. They use the same type of plug, but the order of the colour-coded wire pairs is different. The green and orange pairs (2 and 3) are swapped in the T568B scheme compared to the T568A scheme.

What is a straight Through Cable?ย

Straight-through cable is a type of CAT5 which the RJ-45 connectors at each end have the same pin out. (colour code use on both ends are the same). Straight-Through cable is also referred to as a โ€œpatch cable.โ€ Straight-through cable is used to connect computers and other end user devices to networking devices such as hubs & switches.

What is a crossover cable?

A Crossover cable is a type of CAT where one end is T568A configuration and the other as T568B configuration. Pin 1 is crossed with Pin 3 and Pin 2 is crossed with Pin 6.ย

Crossover cable is used to connect two computers together without using a switch or hub in between.

What is the difference between LSF & LSOH?

LSF (Low Smoke and Fume) cables are made from a modified version of PVC and can emit large amounts of black smoke and hydrogen chloride gas when burned. This black smoke can obscure exit routes during a fire, and hydrogen chloride gas can be harmful to both people and equipment. On the other hand, LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cables, when exposed to fire, emit no more than 0.5% hydrogen chloride and burn cleanly compared to LSF cables.

What is the difference between LSOH & LSZH?

LSOH stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen, while LSZH stands for Low Smoke Zero Halogen as well. They are essentially the same and the terms are used interchangeably. Both types of cables are designed to produce minimal smoke and toxic fumes when exposed to fire.

What is the difference between PVC and LSOH?ย

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a type of plastic used in many cables. LSF cables, which are a modified version of PVC, can produce large amounts of black smoke and hydrogen chloride when burned. LSOH cables, on the other hand, emit no more than 0.5% hydrogen chloride when exposed to fire and burn more cleanly than PVC-based cables.

What is the difference between all cat cables?

Sustainability

Every day at QED, we make choices that we know will have impact far beyond our business, and thatโ€™s a responsibility we take very seriously.

Sustainability and the future at QED

We canโ€™t ignore how serious climate change is and how quickly we need to act to minimise the damage to our planet. With every business decision, we try to do the right thing for our employees and the environment. By actively seeking ways to minimise waste, optimise efficiency, and reduce our carbon footprint, we aim to create a positive impact while supporting our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.

Here are some of the actions weโ€™ve taken so far:

We appointed a new recycling champion, Hannah Whittle, Operations Manager:

Iโ€™m delighted to be the champion for the business, I recycle at home, and I always wanted to bring what I did at home into the workplace. I know if all businesses adopt similar recycling initiative, together we can make a big difference. I want QED to be one of those businesses that do their bit to tackle climate change.

How do I get back in to my device I have forgotten / lost my device password?ย

If you have forgottenโ€ฏa device password but can still access the menu of the device, you will need to factory reset the device. Once the device has been reset this will change the password back to the factory default.

If you have forgotten the password for your LILIN device and you cannot access the device’s mainโ€ฏmenu without being prompted to enter a password, you will need to contactโ€ฏLILIN technical supportโ€ฏso we can help assist you to reset the password.ย

How Do I perform a LILIN HD camera factory reset?ย

If you experience an issue with your IP camera one of the fault finding process is to completely factory reset the IP camera using the emergency factory reset process which is usually a physical button or physical cable located at the camera itself.ย
ย
Bullet / Dome Camerasย
On most bullet and dome cameras there is a physical reset button located within the cameras internals. This will involve removing the cameras cover in order to gain access to the reset button.ย
ย
Once access has been gained and the button located power the camera up and allow 2 – 3 minutes for the camera to boot up. Press and hold the emergency reset button for 30 seconds then release.ย

General NVR Questions

What is the default IP address for all LILIN NVRs?

The default IP address for all LILIN NVR’s is: 192.168.0.111ย

What HDDs do LILIN recommend using?

If you are using a LILIN Standalone NVR and wish to purchase andโ€ฏinstall your own hard disk drives or additional hard disk drives then LILIN recommend Western Digital Purple Series HDD.ย
ย
These are surveillance grade hard drives designed to meet the demanding 24/7 needs a of HD CCTV recorder.

Is there any Remote Client Software for LILIN NVR?

There are various ways of connecting to a LILIN NVR remotely, the main way is to use a web browser, however sometimes using a web browser to connect in to an NVR is not always the most efficient way.ย
ย
If this is the case it is recommended to use the LILIN Client software. This is a small piece of software that can be installed on a PC and run on demand to connect directly in to an NVR.ย
ย
Live view and playback are supported via the client software and once configured the software is a very easy solution for end users when viewing their NVR.ย
ย
ย
Live view and playback of up to 144 cameras simultaneouslyย
Easy configurationย
Password-able to restrict usageย
Easy backup for longer duration incidentsย
Backup/Combine multiple incidents video backup into one folder

What are the default ports to open when connecting remotely to my NVR / DVR?ย

It is no longer recommended to use the default ports when using port forwarding.ย
The default ports that are required to be open in the firewall to allow external connections to a LILIN NVR/DVR are:ย
ย
HTTP: 80ย
Video: 3100ย
ย
If you wish to externally connect to more than one NVR/DVR you will need to change the HTTP and Video ports used by each device so each NVR/DVR is using a unique HTTP port and Video port.ย
ย
Example:ย
ย
NVR 1 – HTTP Port: 80 – Video Port:3100ย
NVR 2 – HTTP Port: 81 – Video Port:3101ย
NVR 3 – HTTP Port: 82 – Video Port:3102ย
ย
Please note changing the HTTP port from its default port 80 will change the URL you will need to use when connecting to the NVR/DVR. The new URL will need to follow this structure:ย
ย
http://:โ€ฏe.g. http://192.168.0.200:81ย
ย
Failure to insure you add the http:// at the beginning and the :โ€ฏat the end of the link will result in you not being able to connect to the NVR/DVR.ย
ย
If this is the case, we recommend you download and install LILIN’s IPScan and simply double click the device you wish to access. This will open your PC’s default browser and insert the correct link including the correct IP address and port number automatically.ย

What should I do if my NVR displaying Video Loss on all cameras?ย

If your NVR is showing video loss on all cameras, please reboot the NVR, this will connect to all the cameras again.ย
ย
Once all the cameras are displaying images once again, you will need to adjust your camera’s bit rate and possibly frame rate.ย
ย
The cause of the NVR losing all its camera connections is the network card is being over loaded and the maximum bandwidth is being exceeded.ย
